Cristobal bringing a top assistant from Oregon to ’Canes

- By Brett Shweky

Former Oregon offensive line coach Alex Mirabal will be following coach Mario Cristobal to the Miami Hurricanes, serving in the same position, he revealed on Twitter Sunday.

Mirabal, a former high school teammate of Cristobal at Miami Columbus, changed his Twitter handle, stating “Offensive Line Coach at the University of Miami.” He is the first known assistant on Cristobal’s staff.

Mirabal, who replaces former offensive line coach Garin Justice, most recently served as Oregon’s offensive line coach and assistant head coach. Before that, he was in charge of the team’s centers and guards from 2018-2020.

During his three seasons at Oregon, Mirabal coached three offensive linemen who earned All-American honors in 2019 Outland Trophy winner and 2021 NFL first-round draft pick Pene Sewell, Shane Lemieux and Calvin Throckmorton.

Behind their stellar offensive line, the Ducks managed to average more than 31 points per game each of the last three seasons, finishing second in the PAC-12 in scoring offense two of the past three seasons.

Last season, Oregon finished tied for 36th in the nation in sacks allowed, giving up only 24 sacks. The Ducks also finished 24th in rushing offense, accumulating 2,833 yards and 36 touchdowns while averaging 202.4 yards per game.

Miami ranked 85th in sacks allowed (30), while finishing 97th (127.7) in rushing offense.

Before joining Oregon’s staff, Mirabal spent five seasons (20132017) with Marshall, where he also worked with the offensive line.

The Miami native spent six years (2007-2012) with Cristobal at FIU, serving as assistant head coach. He worked with the offensive line in his final three years, after coaching tight ends to start his tenure.

Mirabal began his coaching career at Miami Columbus, holding numerous roles from 19932006.
