Cardinals QB Murray tears ACL in right knee

-

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.

Coach Kliff Kingsbury confirmed the extent of the injury during his Tuesday news conference.

The news isn’t a surprise after the 25-year-old injured his right knee on the early in Monday night’s 27-13 loss to the Patriots.

The fourth-year QB was flushed out of the pocket and running to his right when he tried to avoid a defender, but tumbled to the grass in obvious pain.

Players from both teams surrounded the quarterback before he was carted off the field with a towel draped over his head.

Murray was replaced by backup Colt McCoy, who will likely remain the starter for the rest of the season. The Cardinals (4-9) have lost five of six.

Murray, 25, the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2019 and a two-time Pro Bowler, signed a $230.5 million contract during the offseason that could keep him with the franchise until 2028.

In 11 games this season, Murray finished with 2,368 yards passing, 14 TDs and seven interceptions.

Texans RB Dameon Pierce, an offensive rookie of the year candidate, suffered a high ankle sprain during Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys and will miss at least the team’s next game, ESPN reported. Pierce is seventh in the league in rushing yards (939), leads all rookies in scrimmage yards with 1,104 and has scored five total TDs.

Baseball: The Giants and RHP Ross Stripling agreed to a two-year, $25 million contract that includes an opt-out after the first season. Stripling, 33, was 10-4 with a 3.01 ERA in 134 ⅓ innings last season for the Blue Jays.

College football: Purdue named Illinois defensive coordinator Ryan Walters, 36, who oversaw the nation’s No. 1 unit for much of the season, as its next head coach. He replaces Jeff Brohm, who left last week to become head coach at Louisville, his alma mater.
