AROUND THE HORN
Red Sox: Rookie LF Andrew Benintendi was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee sprain. Benintendi was hurt in the seventh inning of a 4-3 loss in 11 innings to the Rays on Wednesday night when he tried to avoid a tag while running toward second base.
Tigers: C James McCann went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer as the Tigers completed a sweep of the Twins with an 8-5 victory. The loss was the Twins’ seventh straight defeat. Francisco Rodriguez preserved the victory by striking out two in a perfect ninth for his 35th save in 38 opportunities. Twins RHP Jose Berrios, the organization’s top pitching prospect, gave up six runs on six hits and five walks in his ninth major league start and was optioned to Triple-A Rochester after the game. RHP Tyler Duffey, the starter Wednesday, also was sent down by the Twins.
Dodgers: In a trade of backup catchers, the Dodgers acquired Carlos Ruiz and $1 million from the Phillies for A.J. Ellis, minor league RHP Tommy Bergjans and a player to be named or cash. Ruiz was hitting .261 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 48 games. Ellis hit .194 with one homer and 13 RBIs as a backup to Yasmani Grandal and was the preferred catcher of LHP Clayton Kershaw.
Rays: LHP Enny Romero earned his first major-league save by striking out Red Sox slugger David Ortiz for the final out of a 2-1 Rays win. OF Mikie Mahtook ended a stretch of 34 hitless at-bats with a go-ahead double in the seventh off LHP Drew Pomeranz (10-10), who is 2-3 since being traded from the Padres to the Red Sox.
Marlins: RF Giancarlo Stanton is not ruling out a return before the season ends. The earliest Stanton, who sustained a Grade 3 left groin strain Aug. 13 while trying to stretch a single into a double, could come back in late September, barring any setbacks. “Anything could help,” Stanton said. “Whatever I could do to be back, if it’s possible, is going to happen.”
