Need some wheels? There’s an app for that

Renting a car can be tedious, but an app-based service that recently entered the South Florida market is trying to simplify the process.

Skurt, a mobility app that soft-launched in Miami in early October, allows users to rent a car using only their smartphone. The company launched in California in October of 2015 and Miami is the first city outside of that state to be served by the app.

“It’s literally a car delivered to you,” said Everette Taylor, Skurt’s chief marketing officer.

The founders of the Los Angeles-based business, Harry Hurst and Josh Mangel, came up with the idea for Skurt toward the end of 2014 when the pair grew frustrated that they were too young to rent a car without additional fees and paperwork. Most car rental companies require renters to be at least 25 to rent a vehicle.

“This is a platform for everyone,” Taylor said, adding that users can rent a car using Skurt starting at age 21.

Miami was an appealing location for Skurt, Taylor said, because of the balmy climate, growing tech market and population of tourists and locals who desire different transportation options. He also mentioned that companies like Uber and Lyft came to Miami later on, when the city turned out to be one of their fastestgrowing markets.

“A lot of tech companies focus on launching in San Francisco or New York, we wanted to be different,” Taylor wrote in an e-mail. “We plan on expanding all over South Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Broward, West Palm Beach, etc.”

“Miami presents a great opportunity for Skurt,” Hurst said in a press release. “It’s a place that’s embraced the on-demand economy, yet has been somewhat underserved by others in the ecosystem. We’re excited to help shape the future of mobility for both residents and visitors alike.”

Unlike Lyft and Uber, Skurt hasn’t run into any issues with local laws or regulations. The major challenge the company faces, said Taylor, is the inability to operate at airports.

Taylor says Skurt also isn’t running into trouble with traditional rental car companies.

“We’re not the enemy of these traditional car rental companies, we work with them,” Taylor said.

Skurt currently operates in Brickell, Wynwood, Miami Beach, downtown and midtown Miami. The company says its services will be available in areas of Palm Beach and Broward soon, but did not offer a specific date.
