Browns quarterback
Robert Griffin III has cleared the final medical hurdle on his comeback trail. Now coach Hue Jackson will decide whether to reinsert him into the starting lineup. All signs are pointing in that direction.
“Beyond blessed to have an opportunity to get back on the field with my brothers,” said Griffin, who didn’t speak to reporters Tuesday but made the statement through a team spokesman.
“I promise my teammates and coaches to give them everything I have as we work to finish the season strong.”
Griffin, who suffered a fracture of a bone in his left shoulder in the season opener and has not played since, was cleared for contact late Monday night. It would presumably be a no-brainer for Jackson to test whether Griffin can breathe life into an inept offense that’s produced just 39 points in the last four games. Peterson progressing: Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is moving forward in the recovery from surgery on his right knee.
He was seen running some short sprints in the team’s indoor facility Tuesday while the athletic training staff supervised and his teammates went through practice on the field. With five games remaining in the regular season, there’s no timetable for Peterson’s return, but the four-time AllPro pick could be ready sometime in December.
Coach Mike Zimmer has consistently refused to entertain any speculation about whether the Vikings might have the franchise’s all-time leading rusher in the backfield again this year, but when pressed on the topic by reporters he acknowledged that Peterson was “probably ahead of schedule” in his rehabilitation. Bills tackle suspended: The NFL suspended Bills offensive tackle Seantrel
Henderson for 10 games, a punishment the player’s agent said stems from his client’s use of marijuana to relieve the effects of Crohn’s disease.
It’s Henderson’s second suspension this year after he served a four-game ban to start the season. Henderson’s agent, Brian Fettner, called the league’s decision “heartbreaking” but added that he cannot appeal the suspension because the NFL doesn’t allow an exemption for medical marijuana use.
Kalil, backup go on IR: The Panthers placed two-time All-Pro center Ryan Kalil and his primary backup,
Gino Gradkowski, on injured reserve, further weakening an offensive line that has been decimated by injuries this season.
Kalil had missed three of the last four games with a shoulder injury, while Gradkowski recently injured his knee. Tyler
Larsen, who filled in at center against the Raiders, is expected to start again when the Panthers visit Seattle.
The Panthers previously lost left tackle Michael
Oher to a season-ending concussion, and backup tackle Daryl Williams injured his leg on Sunday. Free-agent center Ryan
Wendell and tackle Dan France were signed from the Browns practice squad to fill out the 53-man roster.
