‘I killed one, I think,’ resident tells dispatcher

SUNRISE — “They’re in my house,” whispers the frightened homeowner to a 911 operator. “They’re in my house right now.” Then shots are heard. “I killed one, I think,” the panting armed homeowner says next.

Sunrise police on Wednesday released a 13-minute audio recording of a 911 call that captured an attempted home-invasion burglary as it turned deadly.

The blast of gunfire rang out two minutes into homeowner Warren David Darlow’s call to 911.

Darlow dialed 911 a little before 11 a.m. Monday after watching a strange car pull

into the driveway of his Welleby Isles home. He saw two of three men hop a gate into his backyard, police said.

Darlow, 31, had grabbed a shotgun from a locked safe and loaded it before placing the call.

“They’ve been knocking on my door all morning,” Darlow says to the dispatcher. “I am currently armed in my home.”

He isn’t sure, he tells the dispatcher, if the men are preparing to break into his house in the 4300 block of 103rd Terrace or a neighbor’s house.

Darlow’s breathing grows heavier as he realized his house is the target.

“They’re trying to break my back window with bricks,” he urgently whispers. “They’re in my house, they’re in my house right now.”

No words appear to be exchanged between Darlow and the intruder before the distinct sound of five shots.

“Sir, are those shots fired?” the operator asks. “Tell me what is happening, sir.”

That’s when Darlow tells her he thinks he killed one of the intruders. He can be heard panting as he reloads his shotgun and tells the dispatcher he doesn’t know where the other two men are. He says he can hear approaching sirens.

Darlow will face no charges for killing the 21-year-old intruder, Albert Eugene Jones, officials said.

When reached for comment Tuesday, Darlow declined. He could not be reached Wednesday.

Two men who allegedly accompanied Jones during the break-in ran from the home but were caught within a mile, police said.

Jose Demond Coleman, 23, and Curtis Jefferies, 26, are being held without bond in the Broward Main Jail. They face charges of felony murder in Jones’ death.

Florida law allows for anyone who takes part in a felony to face a murder-related charge if someone dies during the crime. Jones died at a hospital about 90 minutes after he was shot.

After the shooting, Darlow remained on the line for about 10 minutes before police arrived and the dispatcher told him it was safe to leave his home.
