CORAL GABLES — This time, it wasn’t a pressurepacked, overtime road win over a ranked opponent.

But the 14th-ranked Hurricanes still put on a show and more than 3,000 screaming children from local schools cheered every possession, basket, and rebound of Miami’s 81-43 win over Loyola Chicago during UM’s annual Elementary School Day game Tuesday morning at the Watsco Center.

It was the Miami women’s largest margin of victory since a 39-point win over Milwaukee on Nov. 27, 2015. And the win, Miami’s eighth in a row, came just five days after the Hurricanes stunned then ninthranked Ohio State on the Buckeyes home court. It also sends Miami into a nine-day break for final exams on a high note. The Hurricanes (8-1) will next play Dec. 16 when they travel to face Florida International.

“We so badly wanted to be thankful and give back so quickly in the game and we didn’t have enough patience,” Miami coach Katie Meier said of playing in front of the program-record crowd of 4,989. “But in the second half, we played our type of style and got fueled by the crowd. I teared up during the national anthem when the kids were singing the national anthem.”

Miami, which rose four spots in Monday’s AP Top 25 after their victory in Columbus, trailed just once against the winless Ramblers (0-8). And moments after falling behind in the first quarter, the Hurricanes (8-1) responded with an 11-0 run to retake control. After that, the only mysteries were whether all of the Hurricanes who played would score and when guard Adrienne Motley would hit a personal milestone.

That moment came with 3:33 left in the half when the senior connected on a 13-foot jumper and became just the ninth player in program history to score 1,500 points at Miami.

“I didn’t realize it, didn’t know what I had ... But we wanted to give these kids a show,” said Motley, who had 12 points and was one of four players in double figures.”

Greene finished with a game-high 14 points for the Hurricanes, and Laura Cornelius added 13 points. Erykah Davenport finished with 10 points and had a game-high nine rebounds.

Brown propels UM men to win

CORAL GABLES — Bruce Brown finished with a triple double as Miami defeated South Carolina State 82-46 Tuesday night.

Brown scored 11 points and finished with 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Hurricanes. The triple double was Miami’s first since Anthony King scored 11 points, had 10 rebounds and blocked 13 shots against Florida Atlantic on Nov. 29, 2004.

The Hurricanes opened the game with an 18-0 run in the first 6:15. Davon Reed and Ja’Quan Newton scored four points each during Miami’s early surge.

The Bulldogs (2-6) missed their first 10 shots until Tashombe Riley’s jumper broke the scoring drought with 13:27 remaining in the first half.

D.J. Vasiljevic scored a team-high 17 points for the Hurricanes. All of Vasiljevic’s field goals were 3-pointers as he shot 5-of-11 from behind the arc.

Eric Eaves scored 14 points to lead the Bulldogs.
