Fire damages mobile home

Rosario and Enrique Garcia were in church Sunday morning when they got a cellphone alert signaling a possible break-in at their home.

After he raced the 10 minutes to the couple’s home in the 2900 block of West Marina Drive, Enrique Garcia found there was no burglary. Instead there was a fire that caused extensive damage to the double-wide unit in the Estates of Fort Lauderdale, according to officials.

“I tried to get through the door, but there was too much smoke to get in,” said Garcia, 47. He turned on the garden hose, but that was no match for the blaze.

The alarm came in at 10:13 a.m., and firefighters from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and Hollywood Fire Rescue knocked down the flames in 7 minutes, according to Broward sheriff’s spokesman Mike Jachles.

Garcia said he suspected the cause of the fire was electrical and that it may have started in or near the kitchen.

The couple’s cat, Paco, escaped injury, Rosario Garcia said.

The couple, who make and sell jewelry, were philosophical about their losses.

“There is a reason for everything,” Enrique Garcia said.

The fire is under investigation by the Broward Sheriff Fire Marshal Bureau and the state Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations, Jachles said.
