FSU says it didn’t get game plans
TALLAHASSEE — Florida State announced its football staff has had no involvement with the Wake Forest radio announcer accused of leaking gameplanning information to opposing teams.
“No one for the Florida State football staff had any interaction with Mr. [Tommy] Elrod, that includes phone calls, text messages or emails,” according to a statement released by the school Thursday.
Florida State has won five consecutive games against Wake Forest, including a 17-6 victory at Doak Campbell Stadium on Oct. 15 this season.
Wake Forest announced Tuesday it fired Elrod after an investigation found he had been leaking plays to opposing teams since 2014.
Elrod, a former Winter Park High quarterback, played at Wake Forest from 1993-97 and was an assistant on the Demon Deacons’ coaching staff. He was not retained by current Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson in 2013.
Along with the termination, Elrod was also banned from the school’s sports teams and its facilities.
Virginia Tech, Louisville and Army have all stated staff members had been contacted by Elrod. Former Hokies head coach Frank Beamer said he didn’t use any of the material the school stated was given to a member of his staff ahead of an ugly game that ended regulation in a 0-0 tie. The Cardinals, meanwhile, confirmed Elrod passed along “a few plays” this season but insisted the information didn’t determine whether Louisville won the game.
“I've never experienced this level of betrayal in coaching,” Clawson told the Associated Press.
’Noles honored
FSU junior running back Dalvin Cook and senior defensive end DeMarcus Walker were officially named consensus All-Americans on Thursday by the NCAA.
Cook was named a unanimous All-American, appearing on the American Football Coaches Association, Football Writers Association of America, the Sporting News, Walter Camp and the Associated Press. He is the 14th FSU player to earn unanimous recognition.
Walker earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors from the media and the coaches.
