Savage will start at QB for Texans

-

Tom Savage will start at quarterback for the Texans on Saturday against the Bengals. Texans coach Bill O’Brien announced the decision Monday, a day after Savage took over in the second quarter when Brock Osweiler was benched against the Jaguars.

Savage threw for 260 yards to help the Texans rally from a 13-point deficit for a 21-20 win in his first regular-season action since 2014.

Osweiler threw two interceptions Sunday before he was benched. He has thrown 16 interceptions with 14 touchdown passes this season.

Jaguars hint at Coughlin: The Jaguars are looking to their past to potentially find their future coach. General manager Dave

Caldwell said former Giants coach Tom Coughlin “would be somebody we’d be interested in talking to” about the team’s coaching vacancy.

Coughlin, 70, was the Jaguars’ first coach and led them to a 68-60 record in eight seasons (1995-2002). Coughlin resigned last January after 12 seasons with the Giants, but has made it clear he wants to return to the NFL. The Jaguars (2-12) fired

Gus Bradley after the franchise’s ninth consecutive loss Sunday. Bradley went 14-48 in four seasons in Jacksonville, the worst winning percentage (.225) of any NFL coach with at least 60 games. Doug Marrone was named interim coach. Marrone has been the team’s assistant head coach/offensive line coach the last two seasons.

A day after his firing, Bradley said he regrets he won’t be around to see the Jaguars win consistently.

49ers spiraling: About the only thing left to determine for the 49ers will be if 2016 will go down as the worst season in franchise history.

After losing their franchise-record 13th straight game Sunday in Atlanta, the 49ers (1-13) must win their final two games to avoid matching or breaking the team record for losses in a season.

The 49ers can tie the single-season loss record reached in 1978, 1979 and 2004 by losing at the Rams on Saturday. With a loss in that game, the 49ers can set the record with a loss in the Jan. 1 season finale at home.

“I don’t think it’s the time right now (to figure out what went wrong), coach Chip Kelly said. “We’ll have time to do that once the season’s ended.”
