Scripps Florida scientist receives $5 million grant

Ron Davis, chairman of the Department of Neuroscien­ce at Scripps Florida in Jupiter, has been awarded a $5 million grant, one of the first of its kind, by the National Institute of Neurologic­al Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health.

The grant focuses on the processes that underlie memory formation, targeting the brain mechanisms that mediate forgetfuln­ess, how the brain organizes memories and the role for genes that suppress memory formation.

Scripps said the grant is fully funded for the first five years. At the end of the fifth year, an administra­tive review of the program’s progress will decide on an additional three-year renewal.

Davis, who specialize­s in the study of memory formation, particular­ly how the brain actively forgets certain memories, will be the principal investigat­or.

“This new type of grant will fund our research program, not just one single project,” Davis said. “It will help us build on what we’ve accomplish­ed over the last 10 years.”
