Peterson won’t play vs. Packers

-

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson will not play Saturday at Green Bay because of knee and groin injuries.

The Vikings ruled out Peterson on Friday.

He returned Sunday for his first game in three months, playing 12 snaps in his return from surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee. Peterson rushed for 22 yards on six carries as the Vikings lost to the Colts 34-6 and were all but eliminated from playoff contention.

If he is unable to play in the season finale against the Bears, there is a chance Peterson will have played his last game as a Viking. The 31-year-old is due to make $18 million next season and would likely have to take a significant pay cut to remain with the team.

Bowles hospitalized: Jets coach Todd Bowles was hospitalized with an undisclosed illness and did not travel for Saturday’s game at New England.

In a statement posted on the team’s website, the Jets said Bowles is in stable condition, but it is uncertain if he will eventually rejoin the team in time for the game. If Bowles is unavailable to coach, assistant head coach Mike Caldwell will fill in.

Donald fined again: The NFL fined Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald a total of $42,540 for his actions in a Week 15 game against the Seahawks.

Donald was flagged for grabbing a face mask in the fourth quarter of the Rams’ 24-3 loss. He was then whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct for picking up the flag and throwing it back toward the official. The league fined Donald $18,231 for unnecessary roughness and $24,309 for the second infraction.

Donald has now been fined $82,040 this season for five infractions.

Mathieu goes on IR: The Cardinals placed Tyrann Mathieu on injured reserve, the third time in four NFL seasons the defensive back has finished the year on the injury list.

Mathieu, a 2015 All-Pro selection, had been trying to play through a shoulder injury. In 10 games this season, he had 36 tackles and one interception.

Smith’s season over: 49ers wide receiver Torrey Smith was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a concussion.

Smith, who became the 18th 49ers player to go on IR, got hurt this month when his head slammed to the turf while he was trying to catch a pass against the Jets. Smith finished the season with 20 catches for 267 yards and three scores.

Extra points: Bears LB Jerrell Freeman was activated from the exempt/commissioner’s permission list, and NT Eddie Goldman went on IR because of an ankle injury . ...
