Patriots coach blows smoke at Miami, our Dave Hyde writes.

You think this is a great Dolphins season?

You have no idea until hearing Bill Belichick.

In 10 minutes on the phone Wednesday, New England’s legendary coach described various aspects of the Dolphins as “phenomenal, “outstanding,” “tremendous,” “excellent” and, evidently because he’d come to the end of his thesaurus, a mere “very productive.”

Wow. The Dolphins already feel like they’ve tunneled their way out of Shawshank this year. Now this! Now they’re being praised by the greatest coach in sports before Sunday’s game!

And wait. There’s more. Belichick also used six “goods” in his quick chat describing the Dolphins and so many “greats” the only way to relate them in one sentence would be to mention a great-great-great-greatgreat-great-great grandfather who was phenomenal and outstanding.

“Tremendous,” Belichick said when asked a lollipop question about Dolphins coach Adam Gase’s work this year. “He’s done a great job. They’re strong in all three areas.

“They can run. They can throw. They’re

as explosive an offense as we’ve seen all year. They had 460 yards against us [in the first meeting], so we saw quite a bit of it.”

This, of course, underlines Belichick as the eternal upbeat and glass-half-full optimist everyone knows him to be. Dolphins fans, especially. Before meeting the 0-6 Dolphins in 2007, he said: “They don’t look like an 0-6 team to me. They’re a good team.”

Those Dolphins finished 1-15, so that might not have been Belichick doing his best analysis. But there’s no doubting his expertise. He’s the Don Shula of this era. Don’t just look at his four Super Bowls. He’s on his sixth Dolphins coach. He helped Rex Ryan get fired in New York and Buffalo.

Counting this year, Belichick has won the AFC East 14 of his 16 years in New England. To put that in NCAA tournament language, New England is Kentucky and the other three teams in the division are Murray State, George Mason and Valparaiso.

You see his greatness in something as arcane as a chat with the media covering the upcoming opponent, too. He’s always on his game. Anyone can talk up the opposing stars. Ndamukong Suh? This was a chip shot for Belichick. Suh is a Pro Bowler.

He called Suh “unblockable” and “tremendously disruptive” in their first meeting, in which Suh did have 13 tackles. But then Belichick ramped up his game. He said, “Suh and [Earl] Mitchell are phenomenal.”

This is what separates Belichick from mere mortals. Mitchell is a nice player. He has had some great moments this year, too. But phenomenal? Mitchell was asked about this.

“I think it’s pretty cool to be mentioned by someone who is obviously as respected as he is,” Mitchell said.

Belichick also showed his greatness by seeing the details. He noted how John Denney, the longest-tenured Dolphin, is an “excellent long-snapper.”

“That’s very nice of him,” Denney said.

Belichick even took the time to refer to defensive end Mario Williams as “Big M.” At least it probably was Mario Williams. Belichick was discussing the Dolphins defensive end position and said, “With Big M and [Jason] Jones, they’ve got a lot of depth at that position.”

The only hint of critical analysis came when Belichick said the Dolphins have “some positions a little thinner than others.”

But he didn’t bring up the linebacker corps that contributes to the 30th-ranked rushing defense.

The secondary, which has lost both starting safeties for the year and isn’t expected to have top cornerback Byron Maxwell on Sunday, he called “a good secondary.”

This was Belichick talking the tight ends:

“We’ve both lost tight ends,” he said of All-World Rob Gronkowski and All-2016Dolphins Jordan Cameron. “That’s part of having a good team.”

The greatest coach in sports knows what he’ll see Sunday.

“Two good teams that’ll be playing in the postseason,’’ Belichick said. He couldn’t resist a final zinger. “Hopefully we can play competitively down there.”

And just think, if the Dolphins win their wild-card game, we could get to hear Belichick take his adjectives to a playoff level before a rematch.
