Lost cause: 49ers let Kelly, GM go

-

The 49ers officially fired coach Chip Kelly and GM

Trent Baalke in the latest overhaul for a franchise that has fallen from Super Bowl contender to the bottom of the standings in three seasons.

Team CEO Jed York announced the moves after the Niners (2-14) matched a franchise record for losses in a season.

“Despite my feelings for Trent and Chip, I felt the decision to change our football leadership was absolutely necessary,” York said in a statement. “The performance of this team has not lived up to my expectations or those of our fans, and that is truly disappointing.”

Owner blames Ryan: Bills owner Terry Pegula said he had no other choice but to fire coach Rex Ryan after the defense showed few signs of progress during the season.

“None of us are happy with the season,” Pegula told the Associated Press.

Pegula based his decision on his own observations, input he’s received from his front-office staff over the course of the season, and also on previous discussions he’s had with Ryan regarding addressing the team’s struggles. Scary moment: Broncos linebacker Zaire Anderson said he didn’t regain feeling in his arms or legs until he was on the way to a hospital after being carted off the field during the Broncos’ 24-6 win over the Raiders.

Anderson dived while covering a punt and jammed his neck when his helmet struck teammate

Quentin Gause’s hip. “Only thing I remember is I was trying to get up and I couldn’t and I couldn’t feel my arms and legs at all. I tried to move them and I couldn’t feel them,” Anderson said.

“I was scared. I was crying and everything because I’ve never been through nothing like that.”

Anderson said doctors told him he compressed his spinal cord. No surgery needed: Cardinals running back David

Johnson’s knee injury is not serious and will not require surgery.

An MRI showed Johnson has a left MCL sprain that would require six to eight weeks of rest and rehabilitation.

Extra points: RB Adrian Peterson declared himself fit to play several more seasons in the NFL, even if it’s not with the Vikings.
