- By Pat Lammer Correspondent

It’s the final five weeks of the high school boys basketball regular season — district play begins Feb. 6 — let’s take a look at the top five programs thus far in Palm Beach County:

1. St. Andrew’s (13-0)

Defeated Loyola (New York), 68-43, in the New Year’s Classic to remain unbeaten on the season. Only two opponents have stayed within 10 points of the Anthony Polite-led Scots. Polite, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, signed with Florida State. St. Andrew’s defeated Montgomery (Ala.) Carver, 62-55, for Kreul Classic bracket championship. A 49-46 win over Orlando Edgewater is its closest game.

2. Grandview Prep (13-1)

Defending state champions had their 43-game win streak snapped with a 71-40 loss to Long Island (N.Y.) Lutheran in the quarterfinals of the Holiday Basketball Classic of the Palm Beaches. LI Lutheran would go on to win the tournament. The Pride bounced back with wins over Mourning (67-50) and Oxbridge Academy (66-51) to claim fifth place. Miami Gulliver Prep is up next on Thursday.

3. Wellington (11-2)

Trent Frazier-led Wellington has won all 11 of its victories by doubledigits. Wolverines routed Benjamin by 28, Boynton Beach by 21 and Palm Beach Gardens by 28 to claim the Palm Beach Shootout championship. Frazier, who has signed to attend Illinois, was named the MVP after scoring 19 in the finals. Two losses are to two-time defending state champion Blanche Ely and Forest Hill.

4. Palm Beach Lakes (12-2)

Won the D-Hop Holiday Tournament championship with a 73-62 victory over John I. Leonard. Has posted victories over Cardinal Newman, 64-51, and Dwyer, 71-65. A huge rematch with Dwyer looms Jan. 10. Lakes’ two losses are to Royal Palm Beach and Suncoast.

5. Dwyer (9-3)

Made it to the championship game of the Holiday Basketball Classic of the Palm Beaches before getting routed by Long Island (N.Y.) Lutheran, 56-25. Had to play without one of its top scorers — junior Miles Coleman — who injured an elbow in the quarterfinals. Only other two losses are to University School and Palm Beach Lakes. Dwyer has defeated McArthur by 31, Suncoast by 24 and Royal Palm Beach by 15. Palm Beach’s Next 5: Suncoast (10-2), Oxbridge (8-3), Lake Worth (9-2), Cardinal Newman (10-4), Royal Palm Beach (10-6).
