A careless blunder may help catch the culprit who leaked security footage of the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting.
And it appears it may be a law enforcement officer.
The footage of the gunman, which TMZ.com posted Sunday, apparently was shot with a cellphone videotaping off an airport security monitor.
In the video, the person’s image was reflected on the glass of the security monitor, Broward Mayor Barbara Sharief said Monday.
Airport officials were able to enhance the reflection and the FBI is using advanced techniques to have an even better look, she said.
Investigators have ruled out airport and FBI personnel, she said.
“It leaves BSO and a couple of other law enforcement agencies that were in that room,” Sharief said. “This person has high security clearance and they gave that video to TMZ. It is a grave concern to us.”
The person could be charged with interfering with a federal investigation.
“If that person sold it and benefited financially, that is another charge,” Sharief said. “At this point we are fairly confident we can confirm who that individual is.”
It’s possible the video was shot unnoticed while other officials were in the airport security room, because the footage was being shown on multiple monitors in different areas of the room, Sharief said.
Broward sheriff and airport officials had no comment, other than to say the leak is under investigation.
“We’re working with the FBI as partners in this investigation,” airport spokesman Greg Meyer said.
TMZ has been known to pay thousands of dollars to sources to acquire video of high-interest subjects. The company has not responded to email requests for comment.
