Town OKs Trump helicopter
Exception made for presidency
The town of Palm Beach is giving Donald Trump a presidential perk that enables him to arrive by helicopter at his island estate.
The Town Council on Tuesday approved Trump’s part-time residence, Mar-aanother Lago, as a helicopter landing site.
That means that when Air Force One flies soon-tobe President Trump into Palm Beach International Airport in nearby West Palm Beach, he will be able to fly over the Intracoastal Waterway instead of taking a limo ride to get to Mar-aLago.
While allowing flights are intended to make it easier for the president to get around during his island visits, they aren’t approved to become another amenity for members at Mar-a-Lago, which doubles as a private club as well as Trump’s part-time home.
The helicopter landing site approval is “for business related to the presidency only,” Town Attorney John Randolph said.
The flights are also only allowed during Trump’s time in office, according to the town.
Even with those limits, the approval for landing helicopters at Mar-a-Lago is sign of the warming relationship through between Trump and town leaders.
Trump and the town of Palm Beach had a rocky start, dating to when the New York real estate mogul in 1985 bought the 18-acre, oceanfront Mar-a-Lago estate and later hoisted an oversized flag that triggered a code enforcement fight.
