St. Andrew’s tops rankings

- By Pat Lammer Correspondent

Just four weeks remain in the high school boys basketball regular season. With district play set to begin Feb. 6, here is a look at the top five programs in Palm Beach County:

1. St. Andrew’s (16-0)

The Scots went on the road and whipped Coral Shores 84-39 on Monday to remain unbeaten. Last week St. Andrew’s took down American Heritage-Delray and Oxbridge. Only two opponents all season have stayed within 10 points of the Anthony Polite-led Scots. Polite, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, signed with Florida State. A 49-46 win over Orlando Edgewater is its closest game.

2. Grandview Prep (15-1)

The defending state champions defeated Miami Gulliver Prep and then Boca Raton to win the Boca Holiday Tournament. The Pride’s 43-game win streak was snapped with a 71-40 loss to Long Island (N.Y.) Lutheran in the quarterfinals of the Holiday Basketball Classic of the Palm Beaches, but they bounced back.

3. Wellington (14-2)

Illinois guard signee Trent Frazier averaged 31 points and five assists to lead the Wolverines to three victories and the Miami SLAM Holiday Classic crown last week. Wellington has won all 14 of its victories by double digits.

4. Palm Beach Lakes (12-2)

They won the D-Hop Holiday Tournament championship with a 73-62 victory over John I. Leonard. The team has posted victories over Cardinal Newman (64-51) and Dwyer (71-65).

5. Dwyer (9-3)

The Panthers kicked off the second half of the season Tuesday night with a rematch vs. Palm Beach Lakes. Dwyer made it to the championship game of the Holiday Basketball Classic of the Palm Beaches before falling to Long Island (N.Y.) Lutheran. Palm Beach’s Next 5: Suncoast (12-3), Lake Worth (10-2), Cardinal Newman (10-4), Royal Palm Beach (11-6), Oxbridge (8-5).
