Travelers are still waiting to get their abandoned items back.

Marla Litowitz fears her family won’t begin healing from the Fort Lauderdale airport shootings until they get back their luggage.

And the Toronto woman doesn’t know when that will be.

More than 20,000 items — many without identifica­tion — were abandoned in bathrooms, concourse shops, terminal floors and the tarmac as panic set in following the shootings in Terminal 2 that left five people dead and six wounded.

The items are now stored in an airport warehouse, tagged and separated by where they were found. About 50 airport and contract employees are working around the clock to match the belongings with detailed claim forms filed by travelers. There are hundreds of cellphones, dozens of baby strollers, laptop computers, look-alike suitcases and many other items.

Thousands of items have been returned so far, but there are thousands to go, airport officials said.

Litowitz said her daughter, who turned 16 on Friday, “never wants to celebrate her birthday again.”

Her two sons, still feeling the terror from running out of Terminal 3 across the tarmac and hiding in a Spirit Airlines maintenanc­e building for hours, can’t find solace in their electronic­s, which were left behind connected to an airport charging station when an order to flee spread.

“Mayhem just broke out, people were yelling get down, get down,” Litowitz said. “Security said drop everything now and run for your life, so we dropped everything and ran.”

Litowitz said her family is missing everything from the critical to the comforting: EpiPens for her son with food allergies, homework and schoolbook­s, computer tablets and a cellphone, $200 worth of American groceries that have much more variety than she can find in Canada.

Also missing are the Oakley sunglasses and $150 cash her son received as a Hanukkah gift during the visit to her parents’ home in Boynton Beach.

Trying to reconnect with those lost items has been a nightmare for Litowitz in the days since the shootings. She said a deputy told her Friday night all the luggage was being checked for weapons. She later filed a claim form but heard conflictin­g stories whether it would do any good. On Tuesday, as she prepared to fly out, a curbside luggage valet had her go to the airport’s lost and found.

Airport spokesman Greg Meyer said getting everyone to give out the correct informatio­n has been difficult.

“None of this stuff is going to lost and found. Lost and found would never be able to handle this amount of stuff,” Meyer said.

For baggage that had been checked, travelers should contact their individual airlines.

For abandoned items, the correct procedure for travelers who haven’t done so already is to call the airport hotline, 866-435-9355, file a claim with a complete descriptio­n of all the items that were left behind and where they were left. Then wait. “If you file a report, you will hear from us, one way or another,” Meyer said, adding that people should only file a claim once.

If the items are found, the airport is in touch to verify they belong to the person and to see how individual­s want them returned. Some are being delivered personally by airport employees to local addresses, while long-distance items are being shipped to their owners.

Airport officials don’t know how long it’s going to take.

They’ve made special efforts in some cases: Maintenanc­e crews were able to dig through luggage on Saturday to find a mechanized wheelchair that a woman needed for her son who was to set out on a cruise that day. On Tuesday, crews reunited a 10-year-old Canadian girl with Rufus, her lost teddy bear.

A private baggage company has been helping with the effort. Once all the items that can be reunited through claims are identified, the company will set up an online site where it will post pictures of any remaining items.

The website is expected to go live Jan. 18, officials said.
