President Obama shortens prison sentences of five South Floridians.
With just a few days left in office, President Barack Obama on Tuesday reduced the prison terms of 209 inmates, including five South Floridians serving sentences on drug convictions.
Two South Floridians were also among the 64 prisoners who were pardoned Tuesday by Obama.
“These 273 individuals learned that our nation is a forgiving nation, where hard work and a commitment to rehabilitation can lead to a second chance, and where wrongs from the past will not deprive an individual of the opportunity to move forward,” White House Counsel Neil Eggleston said.
South Floridians granted commutations are:
Delvin McKinney, 42, of Hallandale Beach; David Louis Hunter, 49, of Loxahatchee; Dwight Spencer, 45, of Miami; Terrance Wellons, 47, of Riviera Beach; and Jermaine Ali Wilson, 40, of Miami.
McKinney has been serving a life sentence since 2005 for several charges, including possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school in South Florida. His prison sentence was reduced to 20 years on the condition that he enroll in a residential drug treatment program.
Hunter was sentenced to a life term in 2005 for possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine in South Florida. His sentence has been reduced to 17 years in prison.
Spencer was convicted of posThe session with intent to distribute cocaine in northern Florida. He was originally sentenced, in 1998, to life in prison. He is now scheduled for release May 17.
Wellons has been serving a 35-year prison sentence since 1999 for several charges, including distribution of cocaine base and carrying a firearm during a drug-trafficking
