Chaminade’s Williams commits to Alabama
A couple of the potential stars of future Iron Bowls can be seen as seniors at Chaminade-Madonna next season.
With junior running back Shaun Shivers already committed to Auburn, the Lions’ other top class of 2018 prospect, four-star wide out Xavier Williams, decided to go with the Crimson Tide.
Williams announced a commitment to Alabama in a Twitter post on Tuesday. It was a decision that was in the making for a long time.
“Once I got the offer [(Feb. 19 last year)], that thought was always in my head with going there and playing and being a household name,” Williams said. “Growing up I loved Miami, of course. Once you get older, you start seeing other programs and how it works, and I just fell in love with Alabama also.”
Shivers says he’s known Alabama was where Williams would end up “way before” he announced his commitment in October. Chaminade coach Dameon Jones noted that Williams would always indicate how he liked the Crimson Tide’s system and that his recruitment came down to the two teams in college football’s past two national championship games, Alabama and Clemson.
The relationship Alabama established with Williams’ parents was a deciding factor for him.
“Alabama let it be known that they wanted to be part of my family,” he said. “They talked to my parents more than they talked to me.”
Williams says it’ll be a “friendly rivalry” between he and Shivers.
Says Shivers: “It’s going to be live playing against my best friend in the Iron Bowl.”
Williams is coming off a junior season in which he caught 10 touchdown passes and finished with 866 receiving yards.
