Woods struggles with 76; Rose shoots 65, leads at Torrey Pines

- By Jay Posner

SAN DIEGO — Playing tournament golf for the first time in 17 months, Tiger Woods on Thursday was all right. Then the one time he went left, his round fell apart.

Woods missed several fairways and greens to the right during his front nine at the Farmers Insurance Open, but made several par saves and wound up at 1-over 37.

He started the back nine on Torrey Pines South with two straight birdies, but then bogeyed 12 and 13 with misses to the right, 14 with a miss to the left and then double-bogeyed 15 after hooking his drive into a hazard.

Woods also made bogey at 17 but finished with a birdie for a 4-over 76, good only for a tie for 133rd place in the field of 156. His round took 5 hours, 16 minutes.

The leader was Justin Rose, who eagled both par-5 holes on his second nine for a 7-under 65 on the easier North Course. Adam Hadwin, who shot a 59 last week in La Quinta, was one shot back after a 66 on the South. Five golfers were tied for third at 5-under 67, although only Brad Fritsch (like Hadwin a Canadian) played the South. Gary Woodland, Charles Howell III, Beau Hossler and Trey Mullinax all played the North.

On a sunny but cool day at Torrey Pines, with an increasing breeze through the afternoon, Woods made eight straight pars after an opening bogey.

Woods missed the fairway and green on the first two holes, and missed the green on the fifth, seventh and eighth holes. Each time he was off to the right.

This is Woods’ first tournament since August 2015, a span of 522 days. He has won at Torrey Pines eight times as a pro, including the 2008 U.S. Open.

Lincicome fires a 64

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas — Brittany Lincicome shot a tournamentrecord 9-under 64 to take the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s season-opening Pure Silk Bahamas Classic.

Lincicome played a sixhole stretch at Ocean Club in 6 under, capping the run with an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole. She added birdies on 11, 14 and 15, and had only 24 putts — the first a 30-footer for par on No. 1.

“Putting, I have no idea,” Lincicome said. “We play, we play little games with my husband or friends or whoever, but it’s not like I go to the putting green and work on it for hours . ... Like I had a par save on 16, I did it cross-handed. I putted the last little 2-footer in crosshanded. Just whatever I kind of feel, I just do it.”

“I was making everything — 30-footers, 10-footers, 5-footers. It was a pretty easy day,” Lincicome said.

U.S. Solheim Cup teammate Stacy Lewis was two strokes back along with Megan Khang and P.K. Kongkraphan.

Gerina Piller was at 67 with Celine Herbin and Simin Feng.

Second-ranked Ariya Jutanugarn had a 75. She won five times last season and took the LPGA Tour player of the year award. Top-ranked Lydia Ko is skipping the tournament.

Fifth-ranked Lexi Thompson, of Coral Springs, opened with a 69, and U.S. Solheim Cup captain Juli Inkster had a 70 to start her 35th season on the LPGA Tour.

Defending champion Hyo Joo Kim shot 71.
