Dogs removed from meat farm find new homes

DANIA BEACH — Ten canines rescued from a dog meat farm in South Korea have been in high demand since arriving in the U.S., stealing hearts and headlines.

More than 200 people wanted to adopt a white Pomeranian named Adam, including some dog lovers from as far as Cali-white fornia, said Mary Steffen, senior vice president of operations at the Humane Society of Broward County.

“It just breaks your heart,” said Carol Arlotta, a Plantation dog lover who took Adam home last Tuesday after hearing of his plight. “I love him to death. He’s just a little ball of fur.”

The pooch — now named Brody — is fitting right in with his new housemate, a black and Pomeranian named Lacey, his new owner said.

Brody was among 200 dogs removed from South Korea this month and taken in by shelters around the United States. Ten arrived at the Humane Society of Broward County on Jan. 19.

Six of the 10 dogs have since been adopted: Donna, Evie, Rocky, Shane and Tally found

homes right after Brody.

One of the more timid dogs, a brindle mix named Scarlett, has gone into foster care. Another, a Jindo mix named Rami, is being socialized by staff at the shelter and should be ready for a new home within the week, Steffen said.

Two others are ready for adoption now: A cocker spaniel named Alex and a mastiff mix named Jillian.

Alex arrived with matted fur but has a new look and a new haircut.

“He just hasn’t met his match yet,” Steffen said. “We are still taking applications for Alex, Jillian and Rami.”

The adoption fee for dogs six months and older is $100. That includes spaying or neutering, a microchip and preliminary vaccinations.

People interested in adopting should come in to the shelter at 2070 Griffin Road to fill out an application.

The shelter opens daily at 10:30 a.m. The adoption desk closes Monday through Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
