Give local governments seat at revision table
Florida’s 412 municipalities — its cities, towns, and villages — are the heart of Florida’s most local form of government, and every one of them works directly with the people to represent their needs and wants effectively.
Since Miami Lakes incorporated as a town in December 2000, including the time I’ve had the honor to serve as mayor, I have seen first-hand the investment municipal government makes in its constituents. As a result, I’ve seen the profound effect local government can have on a single individual.
This connection with individual citizens, and the understanding of the daily issues they face, is why I believe it is so important that city government must have a seat on the Florida Constitution Revision Commission. Every 20 years this commission gives the state of Florida the opportunity to revise our state charter for the better, and I am calling on Gov. Rick Scott, House Speaker Richard Corcoran and Senate President Joe Negron to ensure that cities have a representative on this important commission.
Of the various levels of government, municipalities have the greatest influence on the daily lives of their constituents. From property taxes to city maintenance to community well-being, decisions implemented by local public servants directly impact the daily routine and everyday life of each citizen.
The broad responsibilities of higher levels of governments can at times lead state-level officials to overlook the challenges faced by local governments. That’s why it is essential that a municipal representative be on the commission to express the unique perspective of local officials. The ideal person for this service would be the president of the Florida League of Cities, a locally elected official.
All levels of government are essential threads in the tapestry of our society, and we must ensure that all individuals are properly represented. The appointment of an elected city official to the Constitution Revision Commission would ensure the level of government closest to the people has a voice, and a proper role, in this important process.
