Where to go from here
For the seniors still hopeful of playing college football on scholarship, not every opportunity to get in front of college coaches has been exhausted.
Postseason all-star games, meant to serve as a showcase for outstanding seniors, seem more cathartic than useful for players weary of the grind of five straight months of football and recruiting.
All-star games also take place during a stretch when the attention of college coaches is more focused on the commits they’ve lined up for official visits. To wit, the MiamiDade vs. Broward All-Star Game in December attracted plenty of players, coaches and parents — but not college coaches.
But a round of football recruiting fairs, designed to follow Signing Day, offers South Florida’s unsigned seniors another chance to catch a college coach’s eye.
The Orange Bowl, together with the National Football Foundation and the support of the Broward County Athletic Association, will hold a recruiting showcase at Nova Southeastern University on Saturday. The Orange Bowl’s Andrew Somella estimates 35-40 colleges ranging from Division II to NAIA will be represented at the inaugural event.
Similar NFF initiatives have found success in Los Angeles and Houston. An estimated 80 percent of high school participants received scholarship offers, according to Somella.
