No spring football game for ’Canes

CORAL GABLES — There were rumblings that the Hurricanes wouldn’t have their traditiona­l spring football game this year, and on Wednesday, Miami made it official.

Although the school will begin spring practice March 21 and hold several workouts throughout April, there will be no open scrimmages for fans to attend or a traditiona­l spring game.

The Hurricanes had both last year, with Miami playing its spring game at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale and hosting an open scrimmage at Oxbridge Academy in West Palm Beach.

This year, practices will be closed to the public, though 13 workouts will be open to reporters. One of those practices will be held at Boca Raton High, coach Mark Richt’s alma mater.

In its release announcing the schedule, Miami cited ongoing renovation­s at Hard Rock Stadium as the reason for the lack of a spring game. Last month, Miami athletic director Blake James said there were no plans to have the event at Lockhart this year.
