Fishing report

-

SOUTH FLORIDA OFFSHORE Capt. Willie Howard of West Palm Beach had kingfish on live goggle-eyes Thursday in 130 feet off Juno Beach Pier. Capt. Chris Lemieux of Boynton Beach said fishing has been tough, but he did catch a few nice kingfish Thursday morning in 110 feet. Almaco jacks were biting on some wrecks and Lemieux caught a few mutton snappers on the reef. Capt. Skip Dana said anglers on the Helen S and Fish City Pride drift boats at Hillsboro Inlet Marina have caught decent amounts of kingfish and yellowtail snappers this week. Dana’s anglers on Pop A Top caught a few sailfish, wahoos and dolphin. Richard Stanczyk of Bud N’ Mary’s Marina in Islamorada said the best offshore bet has been blackfin tuna and amberjacks at the humps. The sailfish bite has been slow, and anglers were catching a few kingfish and mutton snappers. The yellowtail snapper bite has been good. Some really big tarpon were showing up in Florida Bay, and fishing for sea trout and mangrove snappers has been good. Redfish and snook also were biting. Spanish mackerel were still plentiful in the Gulf of Mexico. As water levels drop in Everglades canals, more fish are moving out of the marshes, making it a great time to catch largemouth bass, oscars, Mayan cichlids, sunfish and warmouths using topwater lures, jerkbaits and plastic worms. Big bass have been caught flipping creature baits around reeds and fishing swimbaits, jerkbaits and small shad imitations in the grass.
