For arrivals

-

Taxis and limousines have dedicated parking areas, but Uber and Lyft drivers do not. Many circle the airport, waiting for customers.

Only drivers waiting outside the airport property can get notified about a customer, according to Uber spokesman Javier Correoso. A virtual “geofence” around airport property prevents drivers from receiving pickup requests on their ride-hailing apps.

Some Uber drivers park on nearby roads and ramps, along with people waiting for friends and relatives on arriving flights, said Broward Sheriff ’s Capt. Roy Liddicott.

Deputies routinely warn those parking illegally to move on. They issued 5,746 tickets in 2016 to those parking in front of terminals, on ramps and on the shoulders of Federal Highway.

“We just put up a whole bunch of no-parking signs in the last couple of weeks,” said Liddicott, who is in charge of airport security. “We’re also planning to add more poles on the shoulders.”

Fines have increased from $35 to $79 over the past 15 years, but that hasn’t discouraged some drivers.

“We had one of the Uber guys issued three citations in the same day,” Liddicott said. “Three times, same deputy, same driver.”

It’s a safety issue because drivers waiting on the roadside may pull out into traffic suddenly, Liddicott said.

“We’ve had several rearend collisions over the years,” he said.
