Vanderbilt upsets Florida again

- News services

Riley LaChance’s layup with 1 minute, 35 seconds left gave Vanderbilt the lead for good, and the Commodores rallied from a 12-point deficit to upset No. 12 Florida 73-71 in Nashville, Tenn., on Saturday and sweep the Gators.

With the win, Vanderbilt (17-14, 10-8 SEC) has won five of six overall and polished up its resume for the NCAA tournament.

Florida (24-7, 14-4) goes into the SEC tournament having lost two of its last three games.

The Gators led 54-42 with 12:06 left, then went cold down the stretch.

Florida, which lost 68-66 to Vanderbilt in Gainesville in January, had its chances. Kasey Hill’s driving layup missed with 6.7 seconds left, and a wild heave by the Gators came nowhere close at the buzzer.

Florida allowed Vanderbilt to hit 10 of 25 outside the arc earlier this season. This time, the SEC’s second-best defense against the 3-point shot smothered the league’s best shooters outside the arc. Vanderbilt, which averaged a leaguehigh 10.1 3s per game, matched its season low, knocking down only 5 of 22. Pirates upend Bulldogs: Desi Rodriguez scored 21 points, and Angel Delgado added 20 points and 16 rebounds, helping Seton Hall rally from a 10-point, second-half deficit to upset No. 13 Butler 70-64 in Indianapolis.

The Pirates (20-10, 10-8 Big East) scored the game’s final seven points and took a 65-64 lead on Khadeen Carrington’s basket with 1:24 remaining to extend their winning streak to four.

Butler (23-7, 12-6) got 19 points from Kelan Martin and 13 from Avery Woodson but had its four-game winning streak snapped.

Titles clinched: De’Aaron Fox scored 19 points and No. 9 Kentucky (26-5, 16-2) overcame an early deficit to defeat Texas A&M (16-14, 8-10) on the road 71-63 to claim the SEC regular-season title outright. Kentucky won its fifth regular-season SEC championship in eight seasons under coach John Calipari. … Sterling Brown had 26 points and 10 rebounds to help No. 14 SMU (27-4, 17-1) clinch the AAC title outright with a 103-62 home win over Memphis (19-12, 9-9).
