Worker killed in crowbar attack
A worker at a Deerfield Beach construction site attacked and killed another man with a crowbar Wednesday, the Broward Sheriff ’s Office said.
“It is unclear what prompted this attack,” sheriff’s office spokeswoman Gina Carter said. “It’s also unclear if these two men actually knew each other before the attack.”
The attack happened just before 9 a.m. at 700 W. Hillsboro Blvd. Paramedics took Arcenio Alvarez, 32, of Lake Worth, to Broward Health North, where he was pronounced dead at 9:21 a.m.
Deputies arrested the man accused of the attack, Jonathan Schuler, 32, of West Palm Beach. He was also taken to Broward Health North “for various medical reasons,” Carter said. His condition was not immediately known.
Investigators said the two men worked at the same construction site for different companies. Alvarez worked for West Palm Beach-based N&P Demolition; Schuler was a day laborer who was contracted only for the day, Carter said.
As deputies cordoned off the area, a group of workers looked on. One sat on a curb weeping while others held their heads in their hands.
State records show Schuler has been arrested at least five times and has been convicted of marijuana possession and driving with a suspended or revoked license.
Authorities ask anyone with more information about the crime to call Broward Sheriff’s Detective John Curcio at 954-321-4212, Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 or online at browardcrimestoppers.org. Anonymous tips that lead to an arrest are eligible for a reward of up to $3,000.
