Right-hander Scott Copeland, making his first start (third game) of spring, tossed three perfect innings. He struck out two while throwing 22 of his 37 pitches for strikes. Copeland, who missed his last turn due to the birth of his child, impressed manager Don Mattingly. “He was aggressive and looked really good,” Mattingly said. “He fits into that starter/bridge-guy role for us. He’s got some big league experience. He can sink the ball. That’s what we saw today — moving the ball down, changing speeds.” Also on the mound for Miami, Junichi Tazawa threw a scoreless frame. Left-handed prospect Jarlin Garcia struck out three in two one-hit innings. Hunter Cervenka walked two and struck out two in the ninth. The Marlins scored in the first on Destin Hood’s RBI groundout. Derek Dietrich hit a two-run homer in the third, and catcher Carlos Paulino (2 for 3) singled to score a run in the fourth. Former Marlins minor leaguer Francis Martes, now one of the best prospects in Houston’s farm system, started the game but recorded only one out. Three of the four batters he faced reached base (one hit, two walks.)
