South Plantation tops West Boca

South Plantation’s softball team needed extra innings to come away with a narrow 7-6 victory over West Boca in Friday’s Speedball Classic Tournament.

The Paladins got off to an explosive start, scoring four runs in the first inning. Amber Grieve’s three RBI helped South Plantation build a 6-3 lead but Jordyn Lyman’s three-run home run at the top of the seventh inning tied the game at six to force extra innings.

Brooke Worrell’s hit in the eighth inning sent Amanda Maitland home for the game-winning score to improve South Plantation’s record to 13-2 on the season.

The Paladins will face off against American today at 10 a.m. BASEBALL Pompano Beach 8, Somerset Academy 2 Trevor Kniskern pitched for five-and-a-third innings for Pompano Beach (7-1), recording 11 strikeouts, and giving up just three hits. He also went 2-3 on offense with a double and a sacrifice. Pompano’s Jeremy Davis was 2-3 with a home run, two RBI, three runs and a walk. *** American Heritage-Delray 2, Benjamin 0 Troy Hamilton went 2-3 with a double for American Heritage-Delray in a win over Benjamin. Kris Armstrong was 1-2 with a triple for Benjamin in the loss. *** South Plantation 5, Piper 1 Jeff Cohick threw five strikeouts in his six innings of work for the Paladins. *** Douglas 11, Monarch 0 Chad McDaniel, Jacob Stanley and Rafael Santos all had two RBI for Douglas in the handy win. *** Stranahan 10, Dillard 2 *** Fort Lauderdale 11, Boyd Anderson 0 Chris Brooks threw five innings for Fort Lauderdale (3-5) with nine strikeouts. Brandon Alfano went 2-3 with a double and three RBIs, while Josh Brown went 1-2 and added two runs. *** Thursday’s results University School 5, Coral Springs Charter 2 SOFTBALL Speedball Classic Tournament Monarch 4, Westminste­r Christian 1 Emily Estroff struck out 6 batters and also scored a run for Monarch, while Adryanna English went 2-3, with an over-the-fence home run and an RBI. Sarah Goldman added a triple and Emma Medina went 2-3 with a double. South Plantation 7, West Boca 6 Douglas 14, Florida Christian 0 Gianna Lovito got the win for Douglas (10-2), with offensive help from center fielder Monique Poitevin, who recorded a triple and two RBI. Sami Kelley and Allie Macleod also got in on the action for Douglas, with Kelley going 4-4 and Macleod recording a double and two RBI. Riverdale 5, Miramar 4 Reanne Drayton hit a home run for Miramar, but it wasn’t enough. Riverdale won the extra-inning game by the slimmest of margins. Coral Glades 3, Glades Day 0 Alley Taylor threw a complete-game onehitter with eleven strikeouts in the Jaguar win. Catherine Andrews batted 3-3 with an RBI, and Bella Bertot went 2-3 with an RBI for Coral Glades. Palm Beach Gardens 7, Western 0 Dani Farley pitched a complete game shutout for Palm Beach Gardens, while Haley Hoffman went 2-4 in the win. Coral Springs Charter 2, ChaminadeM­adonna 0 Ally Muraskin gets the win in Coral Spring’s Charter’s Speedball Classic opener. Coral Springs Charter 2, West Boca 1 Emily Huvner batted in West Boca’s only run in the close loss, while Ally Muraskin got her second win of the day for Coral Springs Charter. Palm Beach Gardens 5, Miramar 2 Despite Reanne Drayton’s second home run of the day, Miramar took another loss in this one. Kyla Gates, who went six-and-a-third on the mound, gets the win for Palm Beach Gardens. *** Spring Break Tournament Dwyer 2, Venice Beach 2 South Fork 4, Boca Raton 2 Oxbridge 10, John Carroll 5 Jupiter 10, Archbishop McCarthy 0 Olympic Heights 11, John Carroll 8 Seminole Ridge 14, Archbishop McCarthy 2 Masters Academy 7, Dwyer 5 Oxbridge 10, Saint Brendan 0 *** Highlands Christian 16, Berean Christian 0 Kylie Brooks allowed one hit pitching for Highlands Christian, while earning nine strikeouts. Brooks also went 4-4 at the plate, with three doubles and four RBIs. Kira Smith went 1-2 and added a run and two RBIs for the Knights. BOYS LACROSSE Cardinal Gibbons 15, Coral Springs Charter 3 James Foster led Cardinal Gibbons with four goals and three assists, while RJ Breton and Chris Benestad each added two goals. GIRLS LACROSSE Pine Crest 17, Jupiter 11 Lizzie Kaplan had four goals and four assists for Pine Crest, while Tara Shecter added 5 goals and 2 assists. Evin Rothschild had 7 saves for the Panthers. *** Martin County 17, Cooper City 8 Florence Andrieu led Cooper City with three goals, two assists and 11 draw controls, while Amanda Rivas had three goals and an assist. Crystal Williams added two goals for the Cowboys. *** American Heritage-Delray 15, Lake Highland Prep 10 Caitlyn Wurzburger led American HeritageDe­lray with two goals and 10 assists. Megan Mangines had four goals and Allegra Catalano added three goals for the Stallions. *** American Heritage-Delray 15, Lake Highland Prep (Orlando, FL) 10 Megan Mangines had six goals and four draw controls and Caitlyn Wurzburger had two goals and 10 assists, while Kristen Zenor had seven draw controls and two goals for American Heritage-Delray in a win over Lake Highland Prep. Allegra Catalano also contribute­d three goals for the Stallions in the win. VOLLEYBALL Coral Springs 3, Nova 1 25-23, 27-25, 21-25, 25-17 Michael Sommer had 13 kills, 12 service points, two aces, five blocks and five digs and Gabe Ferderick had 10 service points one ace and 26 assists for Coral Springs (2-6) in a win over Nova. FLAG FOOTBALL Boyd Anderson 12, Deerfield Beach 0 Quarterbac­k Isakia Holton had both of Boyd Anderson’s (2-1) touchdowns on one-yard sneak plays, also registerin­g an intercepti­on on defense. Priyanka Gibson had another intercepti­on in the Cobra win. *** Pines Charter 42, Fort Lauderdale 0 Jahneal Morgan had four total touchdowns for Pines Charter (3-0)—two receiving, one on a punt return and one on the return after one of her two intercepti­ons. Junior Christine Alayon threw three touchdowns and made two picks herself while Emily Morejon caught six passes, including a touchdown. *** Plantation 26, Coral Springs 6 Katrevia Love had two rushing touchdowns and quarterbac­k Hollie Major added a rushing touchdown and returned an intercepti­on 40 yards to put Plantation into scoring position in a win over Coral Springs.
