Fishing report

- — Steve Waters

SOUTH FLORIDA OFFSHORE Capt. Tony DiGiulian said there has been good fishing for big dolphin, wahoo and mutton snappers over the past week. “Most of the good dolphin fishing has been inside 600 feet,” DiGiulian said. “There’s been a lot of single bull dolphin 25 to 40 pounds.” DiGiulian said there have also been groups of three or four smaller dolphin traveling together under frigate birds. The fish have been caught trolling in blue water. “The wahoo bite has been tremendous,” he added. “A lot of them have been caught on kite baits. When you see that, it means wahoo are in feeding mode.” DiGiulian said small bonitos are plentiful and can be caught on small feathers and then trolled for wahoo on stinger rigs with wire leaders. THE KEYS Richard Stanczyk of Bud N’ Mary’s Marina in Islamorada said fishing improved this week, with lots of blackfin tunas biting on the edge along with some big kingfish, cobias and sailfish. The Miss Islamorada party boat has had good catches of vermilion, yellowtail, mangrove and mutton snappers. SOUTH FLORIDA INSHORE After cool weather slowed the tarpon bite around Keys bridges and in Florida Bay, large numbers of big fish returned and were being caught by backcountry guides. Anglers fishing with Capt. Rick Stanczyk of Islamorada hooked 12 tarpon and landed six one day. EVERGLADES/FRESHWATER Bass fishing has been good in the canals on both sides of U.S. Highway 27 using hard jerkbaits and topwater plugs. Largemouth and peacock bass were biting the same lures in the Lake Ida chain of lakes. OUTDOORS NOTEBOOK
