Lauderdale girls win in overtime

District water polo continued across Broward County on Tuesday night.

Senior Emily Hill led Fort Lauderdale’s girls team to a narrow 9-8 overtime victory over Deerfield Beach in the District 9 tournament.

After an 8-8 tie at the end of regulation, Hill scored a goal in the first minute of overtime to secure the win for Fort Lauderdale. Hill had three goals, two assists, nine steals and three blocks on the night. Goalkeeper Kalina Anderson had 10 blocks, two steals and two assists to help the Flying L’s.

Number three seed Pompano Beach (12-4) executed a 5-4 victory to upset Fort Lauderdale’s boys team.

Despite being tied 3-3 at the end of the third, the Golden Tornadoes outscored the Flying L’s 2-1 in the fourth quarter to take the win. Senior Kelly Schulte led Pompano Beach with three goals, while Fort Lauderdale’s Will Trybus had one goal and two steals on the night.

In District 11, South Broward’s girls and boys teams took home wins over South Plantation.

Mia Leto helped South Broward’s girls defeat South Plantation 18-9, posting four goals and three assists. Giulia Badoco added a goal and six assists for the Bulldogs (17-2).

South Broward’s boys earned a convincing 15-6 win over South Plantation, with Cody Jones at the helm, scoring five goals and adding three assists. Andrew Lopez chipped in a goal and four assists to secure the win for South Broward (17-3).
