American Heritage-Delray’s girls lacrosse program has been around for only three seasons, but on Wednesday night it showed why it’s a legitimate contender — if not a favorite — to win the state championship this year.

In a battle between two of Florida’s four undefeated teams, the Stallions (13-0) cruised past Naples Barron Collier 17-7 in nondistrict action in Delray Beach.

The loss drops the Panthers to 15-1.

“We just stepped up to the challenge,” Heritage coach John McClain said. “The girls played amazingly well. We got a lot of ground balls and we played with a ton of grit and heart.”

Star freshman Caitlyn Wurzburger, who earned Sun Sentinel Player of the Year honors as an eighth-grader, tallied six goals and eight assists.

“She’s an anomaly, an outlier,” McClain said. “I think she’s the best freshman in the nation.”

AHD’s Megan Mangines added five goals and one assist, while fellow sophomore Allegra Catalano netted three goals.

Heritage dominated from the opening whistle. The Stallions scored 22 seconds into the game on a Wurzburger-to-Catalano goal, setting the tone for the night. American Heritage raced out to a 10-3 halftime lead and cruised from there.
