CORAL GABLES — Miami Hurricanes safety Jeff James has left the Miami football team, the school announced Sunday evening.

James, the nephew of former UM great Edgerrin James, played in just one game last season, logging minutes against Florida A&M in the Hurricanes’ season opener. He was later one of seven players suspended for Miami’s bowl game against West Virginia.

“I talked to Jeff and we both felt it was in his best interests to get a fresh start somewhere else,” Miami coach Mark Richt said in a statement issued by Miami. “We wish him all the best in his future plans.”

James was a three-star prospect out of Orlando’s Olympia High when he signed with the Hurricanes in 2016. He was ranked the No. 56 safety prospect in the nation when he signed with the Hurricanes after totaling more than 1,000 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns as a high school senior.

Two commitments

Over the weekend, the Hurricanes added two more prospects to their already-loaded 2018 recruiting class, securing verbal commitments from four-star tight end prospect Will

Mallory out of Jacksonville and three-star defensive end Gregory

Rousseau of Hialeah Champagnat. Both players announced their decisions on social media, Mallory committing late Friday night and Rousseau joining the class on Saturday afternoon.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Mallory is the son of former Michigan linebacker Mike Mallory. He is rated the nation’s No. 10 tight end prospect by 247Sports.

Rousseau played defensive end, linebacker and safety in high school. The 6-foot-6, 205-pound Rousseau is rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports.com, which lists him as No. 27 weakside defensive end prospect.
