May a busy month for saltwater tournament­s

May is a busy month for saltwater fishing tournament­s, with five events over the next two weekends.

There are two tournament­s Saturday. The Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Shootout is out of Sands Harbor Resort & Marina. The kickoff party is 6-10 p.m. Thursday at the Pompano Beach Civic Center. The entry fee is $475 per boat and the eligible species are dolphin, wahoo, kingfish, cobia and blackfin tuna. The fifth annual Gotta Luv Them Fishing Tournament, which raises money for a Florida Atlantic University scholarshi­p fund and pays out more than $5,000, is Saturday out of the FAU Dania Beach SeaTech campus. The kickoff party starts at 6 p.m. Friday. Entry fee is $500 per boat. Anglers fish for dolphin starting at 8 a.m. The weigh-in is 3-4:30 p.m., followed by cocktails, an awards dinner and the presentati­on of a $2,500 scholarshi­p to an FAU student. The 52nd annual Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo is May 19-20 out of Alsdorf Boat Ramp Park. Eligible species are cobia, dolphin, kingfish, blackfin tuna and wahoo and there is a drift boat division. The Miami Dolphins Foundation has its Fins Weekend Fishing Tournament on May 20 out of Rickenback­er Marina in Key Biscayne. Anglers can fish on their own boats or on a boat with a Dolphins celebrity. The kickoff party is 6:30-10 p.m. May 19 at Miami Marine Stadium. Visit finsweeken­d.com.

The third annual Downtown Showdown KDW is May 20 on Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach, along with a seafood festival. More than $50,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to teams catching the biggest kingfish, dolphin and wahoo. Visit downtownsh­owdownkdw.com.
