Q: Could you please let us know when Hiatus Road from Sunrise to Oakland Park boulevards will be open? It seems like it has been under construction for months. — Angie Krumenacker, Sunrise

A: The $14 million project that started in 2013 is scheduled to open in July.

Hiatus Road will be a four-lane divided roadway between McNab Road in Tamarac and Interstate 595, with bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and a new bridge over the C-13 canal, among other things.

The main work for the project is complete, especially from Sunrise Boulevard to Northwest 29th Manor, said Richard Tornese, Broward County’s engineering director.

The contractor is now focused on finishing the work from Northwest 29th Manor to Oakland Park Boulevard, which includes the final surface of asphalt and pavement markings for the entire project in June, he said.

Crews had to move trees and bushes, utility poles and power lines, TV cables, street lights, and water and drainage lines.

Q: Every morning there is a fender bender and accidents waiting to happen on southbound Interstate 95 between

Atlantic Avenue and Yamato Road. The exits and entrances are so close together. It's one of the most dangerous and congested areas. Are there any plans to remedy that situation? — Dawn Schulz, Delray Beach.

A: Construction of the I-95 interchange at Spanish River Boulevard is scheduled to be done in September.

Once completed, the $69 million project is expected to relieve some traffic congestion on I-95 between Glades Road and Congress Avenue. Hopefully it will have a ripple effect on surrounding roads.

The Florida Highway Patrol says speeding, and aggressive and distracted driving cause more crashes than road design.

For example, the Congress Avenue exit has come under recent scrutiny for the number of crashes on that ramp, some deadly.

The Florida Department of Transportation has installed sev-

eral additional speed limit signs at that exit.

Drivers coming off southbound I-95 at 65 mph or faster are required to slow down to the posted speed limits of 30 mph halfway up the ramp and 5 mph to make a right turn at the top.
