Moore and Dolphins are comfortable together

DAVIE — Matt Moore has long been regarded among the best backups in the league, and he showed that last season by going 2-1 in relief of injured quarterback Ryan Tannehill and leading the Miami Dolphins to their first playoff appearance since the 2008 season.

“You went into the Pittsburgh [wild-card] game and you thought you had a chance in that thing,” offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said Tuesday.

Moore, whose last extended playing time before last season was in 2011 when he went 6-6, said he thought he did fairly well last season as a starter. But the nineyear veteran said he’s not looking to find a starting job even though Christensen said he could start for “five to 10” NFL teams.

Moore, who had eight touchdowns, three interceptions and a 105.6 passer rating last season, sees the same thing.

“I think it’s natural to have thoughts you’re capable to play in this league,” said Moore on the second day of this week’s organized team activities. “But I’m happy where I’m at.”

And overall he was happy with last year’s performance.

As for the concussion scare he had in the playoff game, the result of taking a vicious hit from Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree, the league ruled the Dolphins inserted Moore back into the game too quickly. Moore, who only missed one snap, said he understands why the play raised eyebrows with the league and players’ association.

“I mean I think both sides, the PA and the league and everyone, was kind of doing their jobs and doing what they have to do,” he said. “I understand that. I did my best to say it was a non-issue.”

“He may be the most improved guy out there this offseason,” Christensen said. “He has really been impressive. … He looks like a pro. He just looks like a pro. His body looks like a pro, how he carries himself, how he handles himself, how he works, how he practices — he’s a different guy from a year ago.”
