Michael Gigliotti continued Archbishop McCarthy’s run of early selections in this year’s Major League Baseball draft.

The former Maverick and Lipscomb University center fielder was selected by the Kansas City Royals in fourth round, 120th overall.

The 2014 McCarthy graduate follows third baseman Joe Perez, who helped lead the Southwest Ranches high school team to its most recent state title. Perez went in the second round Monday to the Houston Astros with the 53rd pick.

Mark Vientos, 17, a standout infielder for American Heritage, also went in Round 2, selected by the New York Mets with the 57th pick.

Palm Beach Gardens alum Pavin Smith, who played college ball for three years at Virginia, was the highest local draft pick, going seventh overall to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Several promising Broward and Palm Beach high school players remain available after the first two days of the draft.

Several are listed among the Baseball America’s top 150 prospects, including Calvary Christian pitcher Jake Eder (No. 69), Cardinal Newman pitcher Shane Drohan (106) and St. Thomas Aquinas alum Jordan Spicer (144), a pitcher at Polk State.

Gigliotti won multiple state titles with the Mavericks before graduating in 2014. He entered the draft after three seasons at Lipscomb, a private Division-I school in Nashville.

His eye at the plate — 51 walks as a junior for a .447 on-base percentage — and speed (31 stolen bases last year) make him a solid topof-the-order prospect.

James Marinan, a recent Park Vista grad and Miami signee, was selected shortly after Gigiliotti, at 130th, by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound right-hander, who was ranked the 59th overall prospect, went 8-1 with an 0.84 ERA for the Cobras this spring.

Marinan will now have to decide whether to sign a contract with the Dodgers or attend the University of Miami for at least three years before being eligible to enter the draft again. The approximate slot value for the signing bonus of his pick is $401,000. The slot value for Gugliotti is $441,700.

The draft will conclude today with Rounds 11-40.
