Get along peacefully on roads
This subject seems to keep being beaten, but it’s far from dead. Cars kill. Bicycles don’t. So when you see a cyclist breeze through a fourway stop sign, just hold that brake pedal down for another beat and go on about your day. You will have forgotten about the whole thing in 10 seconds, when the next annoying thing draws your attention during your drive.
If a cyclist — or group of cyclists — does something that you feel is annoying or possibly illegal, just let them get out of your way — they want to as much as you want them to — and keep your 3,000 lb. weapon under control. I promise you will have forgotten about it by the next intersection.
Do you yell at the road construction workers or lawn maintenance guys when their trucks are blocking the road and bringing traffic to a stop? Do you scream, “Get out of the road!” to the flag man standing in front of you delaying your drive by a few moments? Then put this all into perspective and try not to get all road raged up at cyclists who are not intentionally trying to get in your way. They are generally trying to get out of the way as quickly as possible, which is why we roll through stop signs — after slowing down and checking for traffic — and finding the quickest and safest way through an intersection regardless of the colors of the lights. Idaho (and Europe) has cycling laws that take all this into account.
So when you see a cyclist, take a beat, put the phone down, pay attention, and let them get out of your way so you can move on with your life and no one gets killed. James Miller, Pompano Beach
