- By Ira Winderman Staff writer

Short on bodies, the Miami Heat ran out of time at the Las Vegas summer league Saturday with a 98-95 double-overtime loss to a similar team of young players from the Memphis Grizzlies.

Despite outside success that saw them shoot 16 of 34 on 3-pointers, including 6 of 9 by undrafted Central Florida guard Matt Williams and 5 of 12 by undrafted Colorado State guard Gian Clavell, the Heat wound up closing summer-league play at 4-7, after their a 4-2 run in Las Vegas.

Even with Bam Adebayo and Okaro White given the game off, the Heat were able to force the first overtime on a 3-pointer with 5.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter by Clavell.

But after each team was limited to a pair of points in the first two-minute overtime, the Heat were unable to get another tying 3-pointer at the end of the second overtime, with Clavell this time off with 2.6 seconds left.

Clavell, the Hialeah Gardens High product, led the Heat with 20 points off the bench, with Williams scoring 18.

Teams typically close out summer league with thinned-out rosters and the Heat were no exception.

Adebayo was given a third consecutive game off, with the Heat already with their offseason read on the first-round pick out of Kentucky.

A game after scoring a game-high 23 points against the Los Angeles Clippers, White, the lone player on the Heat summer roster who was with the team last season, also sat out.

In addition, Sebastian Saiz, the undrafted power forward out of Mississippi who helped provide bulk for the Heat’s summer unit, left the team in advance of Saturday’s game in order to begin training with Spain’s national team. Saiz has previously played for Spain’s Under-19 and Under-20 teams in the World Championships.

The Heat also remained without undrafted Virginia guard London Perrantes, who again sat out with a sprained left foot.

Trey McKinney-Jones, the former University of Miami wing who joined the Heat at the start of the Las Vegas summer league, left the team in advance of the weekend after sustaining a shoulder injury late in Monday’s victory over the Washington Wizards.

The Grizzlies, who advanced to Sunday’s semifinals of the Las Vegas tournament, were led by the 24 points of guard Wayne Selden, who scored 12 in the fourth quarter to rally Memphis. Odum was in Saturday’s starting lineup for the Heat, closing with three points on 1-of-3 shooting and four assists.
