- By Cindy Kent Staff writer ckent@sunsentinel.com

Most recently a teaching artist with the Palm Beach Opera, Abbey Ward has taken on the new position of education and community engagement associate, responsible for managing the company’s Palm Beach Opera Studio and Story Time Series programs. This isn’t just about entertaining the little ones though — it’s about helping youth envision careers in the arts and about developing audiences. Ward’s job is important because she brings opera into the community, making it accessible to all.

Resume

Experience: Central Florida Lyric Opera Resident Artist, Lyric Opera Virginia Young Artist, New York Lyric Opera Theatre Emerging Artist.

Education: Manhattan School of Music, NY — Master of Music Degree in Voice Performance; Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, Wheaton, Il — Bachelor of Music Degree in Voice Performance.

On the job

Typical day: My “office” includes classrooms, libraries, homeless shelters, hospitals, assisted living centers, the vocal studio or a stage, or a special event.

What’s new: Opera is becoming more user-friendly — and meeting the audience where they are creates a lasting, sustained impact

Professional development: Masterclasses, voice teachers, coaches and young artist training programs have all helped to shape me. But the scope of jobs is grander than what people see on stage. Typically, or season employs 200-300 people including performers, crew, production, wardrobe, makeup, administrators and more.

Lasting impression: Gaining knowledge at an early age can have an impact on career decisions. In high school, though I initially believed opera was “the lady with the horns,” my stereotypes quickly vanished and I fell in love with the art form. Opera tells a story, combining all the arts into one. Once we introduce young people to opera, many of them walk away excited and humming the songs.

Industry wisdom: There is always more to learn. Opera singers continually refine and hone their craft through technique, acting, movement, language study.
