Free public scrimmage Saturday

- Matthew DeFranks

BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic’s football team will hold its second scrimmage of preseason camp on Saturday at FAU Stadium. It starts at 1 p.m. and will be open to the public.

The Owls held a scrimmage last Saturday at Liberty City’s Hadley Park, but they were not live, meaning they did not tackle. FAU coach Lane Kiffin said he anticipated parts of Saturday’s scrimmage would be live.

Kiffin described Saturday’s scrimmage as “a big evaluation,” noting that he would pay extra attention to the defensive line.

“You got some newer guys, a lot of depth there at defensive end to see who plays really well in that situation,” Kiffin said.

FAU rotated six defensive ends with the first and second teams on Friday morning: Haiden Nagel, Nick Internicola, Kain Daub, Ernest Bagner, Tim Bonner and Hunter Snyder.

But most eyes will be glued to the quarterbacks. Friday was Jason Driskel’s day with the first-team offense, and De’Andre Johnson mostly worked with the second unit. Daniel Parr received some snaps with the twos.

The three are vying to be FAU’s starting quarterback for its season opener Sept. 1 against Navy. Kiffin has said there is no deadline on a quarterback decision.

Kiffin admitted that he doesn’t “have any idea” how good his team is at tackling, and Saturday could decide how much of it FAU does through the rest of camp.

Next game: Navy at FAU, Sept. 1, 8 p.m., ESPNU
