Garvin shines early in ’Canes camp

- Christy Cabrera Chirinos

CORAL GABLES — As a freshman last season, made his presence known for the Miami Hurricanes.

Jackson Next game: Jonathan Garvin Kc McDermott Joe

He arrived on campus from Gulliver Prep and needed little time to make an impact. He appeared in all 13 games for Miami in 2016 and made his first start against Virginia Tech in October.

By season’s end, Jackson was the Hurricanes leader in sacks (8.5) and tackles for loss (11.5) and he enters his sophomore season expected to be one of the leaders on one of the ACC’s top defensive lines.

Through two weeks of camp, the sophomore says he sees one of Miami’s newcomers with the potential to put together an even better freshman campaign. And like Miami’s coaches, Jackson is eager to see what former Lake Worth standout does once the season begins.

“One thing he does do well is [he has] speed. He comes off the ball, he’s fast. It’s very hard to stop him when he’s just using his speed rush. That’s one thing he does really well. … I think he’s better than me at this time because he came in earlier,” Jackson said of Garvin, who enrolled at Miami in January and already has participated in spring practice. “And I think he has better raw talent than me, to be honest. So I think he’s doing pretty good. He learns the plays, he’s going to be OK.”

Jackson isn’t the only one raving about Garvin’s play. Hurricanes offensive lineman said Garvin is “going to be one hell of a football player.”
