CORAL GABLES — As of now, Miami Hurricanes coach

is leaning toward experience in the quarterback competition.

Richt said at Monday’s media day he would choose between and if he had to make a decision at the moment. Both have been more consistent than freshmen and

“If I were to do it today, it would be an older guy right now, one of the two veterans,” Richt said.

With three weeks left before the season opener, there is still plenty time for Weldon and Perry to improve. Richt said the veterans showed more consistency in last Saturday’s scrimmage at Hard Rock Stadium.

“The two older guys, they did a nice job with their decision-making,” Richt said. “Because they knew where to go with the ball and when to go with it, they were more accurate. The younger ones were a little bit more confused at times.”

Offensive line coach refused to discuss the sudden departure of center who started all 13 games in 2015. Searels preferred to focus on the current group of linemen on the team.

“We lost some depth, but it’s also good for some young guys to take a step up,” offensive coordinator

said. “Guys in the recruiting process always want to talk about, ‘I want to come in and play.’ Well, here’s your chance.’ ”
