Spurrier talks Callaway suspension

- Edgar Thompson

GAINESVILLE – On the first day of his new job at Sirius XM, did not waste any time sharing his thoughts on suspension.

The Head Ball Coach asked the question on everyone’s mind about Callaway.

“People are wondering when he’s going to straighten up,” Spurrier said. “I get the feeling this will be Antonio Callaway’s last chance.”

Callaway’s third off-the-field incident in 20 months led coach to suspend his star playmaker and six teammates from the Sept. 2 season opener against Michigan.

Spurrier praised McElwain’s punishment, noting he suspended star CB and TE for last season’s opener after they got in a fistfight.

“Coach Mac give him credit,” Spurrier said. “Guys mess up and guys are going to pay the toll. Hopefully these guys will learn a lesson.”

Callaway has had opportunities to learn from his mistakes. On May 13, he was cited for marijuana possession while he was a passenger in the car with a 40-year-old career criminal. During the past week, Callaway and some teammates reportedly used funds from their scholarships to buy electronics, and then reported the cards they used had been stolen.

Spurrier said at some point any player, even Callaway, becomes too much of a headache.

“He’s a good receiver, but the Gators have a lot of good receivers,” Spurrier said.
