Kinsler fined $10K for ripping ump

-

Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler was fined $10,000 for his comments about umpire Angel Hernandez, ESPN reported Monday.

On Aug. 15, Kinsler called Hernandez a bad umpire who is “messing with baseball games, blatantly. He needs to find another job, he really does.”

On Saturday, some umpires across Major League Baseball wore white wristbands as a show of solidarity after Kinsler was not suspended.

Major League Baseball reportedly notified the umpires in writing that the wristband protest would lead to fines.

On Sunday, the umpires ended their protest.

Commissioner Rob Manfred offered to meet with their union’s governing board.

Kinsler never backed down from his comments, saying Friday that he was fined but that he had no regrets about what he said.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus called the fine the biggest he has seen during his career.

“To act like Ian Kinsler just got fined ... it’s the biggest fine I’ve ever seen Major League Baseball give a player,” Ausmus said Sat- urday. “So I don’t want to hear — I don’t want them to minimize — that he’s not being punished.”

When Hernandez heard Kinsler’s comments immediately after the game, Hernandez said he didn’t care what Kinsler said and was only concerned about doing the best job he can.

The next night, when Hernandez was working second base in the finale of the Rangers-Tigers series, the umpire and Kinsler shook hands when Kinsler took his position in the first inning.

They shared a few words, and Hernandez briefly put his hand on Kinsler’s shoulder after the handshake.
