Receiver Woods rejoins team
BOCA RATON — Suspended Florida Atlantic receiver Kalib Woods has rejoined the football team, Owls coach Lane Kiffin announced Monday afternoon.
Woods was arrested in June and charged with two counts of felony battery stemming from an alleged altercation in January at a Boca Raton banquet hall. The program immediately suspended him indefinitely “pending the outcome of the charges.”
Woods’ charges are still outstanding, with a status update scheduled for Oct. 16. He pleaded not guilty, and his attorney Michael Gottlieb filed a motion to dismiss the charges claiming a justifiable use of force under “Stand Your Ground.” Woods’ house arrest was lifted by a Palm Beach County judge Aug. 14.
Woods is accused of hospitalizing two victims during an altercation at The Venue in Boca Raton. According to a police report, one victim suffered a broken jaw while the other had internal bleeding.
The motion to dismiss claimed Woods did not initiate the fight. Citing surveillance video, the motion said Woods is pushed from behind by an unknown person on the dance floor and then acts “in fear for his safety.”
Kiffin said the university punished Woods, and added that Woods’ scholarship was revoked, so the redshirt senior had to pay for school and technically return to the Owls as a walk-on. He did not announce any further discipline for Woods, including a potential suspension for upcoming games.
