Irma’s impact on travel unknown

- Matthew DeFranks

BOCA RATON — Coach was unsure how Hurricane Irma would affect the Owls’ travel plans for their road game at No. 9 Wisconsin this weekend.

“I don’t know all that yet,” Kiffin said. “Obviously, I’m not a weatherman, so I just listen to what they say and I guess there’s a potential that we could get stuck up there. Potential of flying back somewhere more north like Orlando, I guess, and driving down. We’ll just do whatever they tell us to do.”

As of Tuesday’s 2 p.m. advisory, Irma was a Category 5 hurricane expected to impact South Florida as early as Friday evening, with effects lasting Saturday and Sunday. The Owls kick off against Wisconsin at noon on Saturday.

Kiffin said FAU was planning to fly to Madison on Friday after its morning practice. Kiffin said he has not looked at potential facilities the Owls could practice at should they not be able to return to Boca Raton next week.

Kiffin said he’s never guided a team through a hurricane while at Alabama, USC, Tennessee or the Oakland Raiders. Last year, FAU was forced to move its home game against Charlotte to a Sunday afternoon after Hurricane Matthew threatened the area. In its opener against Navy on Friday, FAU suffered through three lightning delays that made the game the longest in school history.

“They told me yesterday that you got to take your boat somewhere,” Kiffin said.
